Sites in Mecklenburg County with Brownfield Agreements

Mecklenburg County has 60 brownfield agreements, far than any other county. This is partly due to the speed with which Charlotte and surrounding areas developed during the real estate bubble. However, credit is also due to Charlotte and Mecklenburg's emphasis on redeveloping brownfields. Charlotte was one of the first cities to receive a brownfield assessment grant from the EPA in 1996. Since then, the city has established a revolving loan fund to pay for cleanups and paid for a full-time staff member to help applicants to the North Carolina Brownfields Program through the process. The map below shows the locations of sites with brownfield agreements. However, the map does not show the many brownfields that are not participating in the program; the city estimates that there are close to 1000 in total.
